Metal

Duality

I was to duplicate this ceramic paint pallet with metal. I thought it would be easy based in the geometric shapes. However, when I was almost done, I filed a hole in the solder seam. In an attempt to fix the hole, I melted some 0% silver solder in the area to add material. This process added some dents and bangs that I just don't have the energy to fix. My instructor doesn't know what material the new solder is made of, as she picked it up in Mexico, but it turned out to look gray. I wanted the color difference to look intentional, so I painted watercolor on the original object.

I know where I went wrong. The metal object began to look solid (it is actually hollow). This tricked my brain and I thought it would be fine to file away more metal that what is there. This whole class is based on the notion that cast metal has a different purpose than fabricated metal, and my project blurred these lines. For this reason, my professor is happy I made this mistake for the sake of learning. Brass & copper, 2022
